Why We’re Introducing Watch Me Swimming Awards at Daddy Shark Swim School

Five powerful reasons these awards mean so much to our families

At Daddy Shark Swim School, we’ve always believed that swimming success isn’t just measured in metres and stages — it’s found in the little moments that build confidence, courage and joy. That’s why we’re so excited to introduce the beautiful, child-centred Watch Me Swimming Awards into our programme alongside our existing Swim England scheme at both our pools in Ormskirk and Southport.

These awards align perfectly with the way children truly learn, communicate and celebrate their progress. Here are the five biggest reasons we love them — and why we know your children will love them too.

1. They recognise the critical importance of connection

At Daddy Shark, relationship is at the heart of everything we do. It’s the reason our teachers are in the water — right there alongside the children. It’s why our groups are small, why parents are poolside, and why we support swimmers from three months old all the way through to confidently swimming hundreds of metres across all four strokes.

We believe connection is what makes a child feel safe.
Connection is what helps them feel happy.
Connection is what empowers them to be brave, to try, to keep going — and that confidence not only ensures they make the very best progress possible in their learn to swim journey, but stretches far beyond the swimming pool into everyday life.

And this is exactly why the Watch Me Swimming Awards resonated with us instantly.

The phrase Watch Me encapsulates the heart of relationship in the most perfect, simple way. Every week we hear it — children calling out to teachers or parents poolside:

“Watch me! Watch me!”

Those two words are about trust, pride, communication and shared joy. The awards take that moment — that spark — and turn it into something meaningful and lasting. This is why they landed with us so strongly.

2. They capture the small moments that are actually the big moments

In swimming, progress isn’t always about distances or badges — it’s often about the quiet victories in between. The Watch Me Swimming Awards shine a spotlight on the milestones that genuinely matter to children and parents alike, such as:

  • the triumph of overcoming a fear
  •  joining in a lesson for the first time
  • being brave enough to try a brand-new skill or moving to a new stage
  • overcoming a setback — progress isn’t linear!
  •  showing confidence that wasn’t there last week
  •  the effort of listening, focusing or following instructions
  • or simply enjoying the water on their own terms

Because learning to swim and play is at the core of early swimming development, these moments matter deeply. For many children, especially those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD or additional needs, these achievements are enormous. They represent courage, trust, emotional regulation and growth — and now they have a meaningful way to be recognised.

These are the moments families remember forever, and the Watch Me Swimming Awards honour them beautifully.

3. They are wonderfully inclusive—every swimmer’s progress can be celebrated

As an Autism Swim–approved swimming school, we know that not all children follow the same pathway when learning to swim. Some learn through structure, some through play, some through repetition, and some through imaginative exploration. For many of our swimmers, traditional certificates may feel out of reach, irrelevant, or simply not reflective of their true progress.

But the Watch Me Swimming Awards change that completely.

With this scheme, our toolkit now feels full to bursting — giving us a beautiful, flexible and meaningful way to recognise the achievements, joy and progress of all of our little swimmers, regardless of ability, needs or learning style.

Every child can experience success.
Every child can feel proud.
Every child can be seen.

And that matters so much.

4. They mirror the language children naturally use — and that matters

One of the most wonderful parts of this award scheme is how it reflects the playful, imaginative world children create in the pool.

In our lessons, we learn to swim through play by:
“listening for fish”
“hunting for treasure”
“splashing toes”

And we provide lots of visual demonstrations with teachers encouraging the children to:
“Watch me!”

By mirroring the exact words children use and understand, the Watch Me Swimming Awards reinforce their learning and sense of achievement even more deeply. It tells them:

“I heard you. I understood your world. And I saw what you did today.”

This kind of linguistic mirroring boosts confidence, emotional connection and memory — a powerful way to support learning in the water for all children.

5. They’re bright, visual and beautiful—the kind of awards children love to collect

Many children love anything they can see, hold and show off — and the Watch Me Swim Awards are designed exactly for that. They’re:

  • bright
  • colourful
  • visually engaging
  • perfect for memory folders, bedroom walls or the family fridge
  • exciting to collect over time

From our youngest swimmers who respond brilliantly to simple visuals, to our confident older sharks earning fun awards like somersaults and handstands, these certificates capture the fun and achievement of learning to swim in a way that feels joyful and meaningful.

They instantly become part of a child’s story — a celebration of who they are and the steps they’ve taken.

Why these awards are the perfect fit for Daddy Shark

At Daddy Shark, we’re known for teaching babies through to children achieving hundreds of metres on all four strokes. Learning to swim and play through connection, imagination and patient encouragement is at the heart of what we do. The Watch Me Swimming Awards honour that philosophy completely.

They recognise progress that matters to the child.
They celebrate bravery and joy.
They reflect a child’s voice, imagination and individuality.
They are inclusive, uplifting and meaningful for every learner.
And they remind families that every little moment is a big one.

We can’t wait to begin awarding these to our magnificent little sharks.
